Environment Matters
We often think of education in terms of teachers, curriculum, and what happens in the classroom. But research suggests that the environments surrounding our students can also influence how they learn, think, and engage. The design of a learning environment—from the spaces students move through to the natural world around them—can shape attention, creativity, well-being, and connection.
Student Environment
The peer environment is also very important for a student’s learning. Researchers have found that the adolescent brain is re-modeling and reconfiguring key brain systems in a period of vulnerability and opportunity.
“Neuroscientists have found that during adolescence, the brain’s reward systems are highly responsive to peer interactions, and these interactions significantly influence both the reward system and decision-making processes (Crone & Dahl, 2012). Peers become an important aspect of the learning environment, affecting not just the social and emotional aspects of adolescent development, but also influencing academic outcomes and cognitive development.”
As a result, students will likely choose to emulate and even adopt the ideas and characteristics of the peers around them. Study habits, standards of excellence, and behavioral choices are all impacted by those peers that a student is consistently around–emphasizing the great importance of a healthy learning environment and student body.
Why Emphasise Environment
The adolescent years are a critical period of brain development. While this time creates important opportunities for growth and learning, a developing brain can also be particularly vulnerable to environmental stressors.

“However, neuroplasticity may render adolescents particularly vulnerable to environmental stressors, which can impact neural development and contribute to adolescent-onset mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression (Drzewiecki and Juraska, 2020, Merikangas et al., 2010). Understanding what students are experiencing is essential to creating environments where they feel safe, supported, and able to ask for help. At BCS, protecting the well-being of our students is an important part of creating an environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive.
